The inspiration for this book arose from a conviction that Russborough, which is frequently referred to as one of the most beautiful houses in Ireland, has an attractive and interesting story to tell and the time has come to share its eventful history with both connoisseur and enthusiast. While the building featured in a number of well-written and learned articles in the last century, until now no publication has succeeded in bringing together the history of the house, the estate and those who lived there.

The three themes developed in the narrative that follows convern the house, the families residing there and its collections. Research in to the evolution of all three from the mid-eighteenth century to the present day has produced an immense amound of material, much of it previously unpublished.

The stunning photographs by James Fennell make it clear why this house is one of Ireland's prime historical assets. These images allow us to appreciate the genius not just of the architect Richard Castle, of the Lafranchini brothers and of the sculptor Thomas Carter the Elder, but also the wonderful stucco and wood work of Irish artisans visible in the house.

Whether you are a first time visitor or a returning friend, we hope you enjoy this beatiful publication.
