These ring-necked parakeets ( Psittacus torquatus ), as beautiful as they are belligerent, have invaded Europe. They can be found in London, around Paris... In my garden, they devour apples. Edward Lear (1812-1888) was in his twenties when he painted this watercolor, published in 1835.

On the back cover : a willow branch, chosen for its color and curves which match those of our magnificent parakeet. Salix alba , illustration taken from Nicolai Thomae Host's book on willows (1828).
