These illustrations, both the color wheel and the butterflies on the back of the notebook, were created by the English entomologist and engraver Moses Harris (1731-1785) for his work An Exposition of English Insects , published in London in 1776. His "color system" is built on the hypothesis, very innovative in the 18th century , that all shades arise from the mixture of three "primitive" colors: red, yellow and blue.
